GREEN CHRISTMAS

Did you know that

  • 35 million cans,

  • 45 million drink bottels,

  • 25 million cardbord toyboxes,

  • 4 million sweet boxes

will be used in Ireland this Christmas. Scoil San Phroinsias have thought of ways to be green and to recycle this Christmas. These are some of our ideas.

6th class target litter

Well done to Ms. Farrelly's 6th class for all the litter picking they did today. We wish they hadn't found quite so much litter.....what could we do about that I wonder?!

Really Rapping!

The Coiste Glas would like every class to learn the rap which Adam Forde composed. Have some fun with your class....and your teacher.....adding your own music and rhythm to the rap. Be creative!! Maybe you can add another verse to Adam's rap? If you think you can, let your coiste glas representative know.

Repak recycling week runs from 6th to 12th October. Last year Repak funded the recycling of over 643,000 tonnes (circa 60%) of used packaging in Ireland!! That is a lot of packaging! Remember to use less, use again and recycle as many things as you can.

Back to Back

Comhghairdeas to Mrs. O'Connors Rang a 3 for being the first class (that we know of!) to photocopy onto the back of old, used pages. Way to go!! The Coiste Glas are proud of you, and the trees are happy too!

Remarkable Re-users!

Congratulations to Ms. Farrelly's rang a 6 for making excellent use of old materials in their art lessons. Already this year they have made gift bags from old milk and juice cartons, and they have made waster paper bins from old newspapers. Check out their class blog for more details.

Litter Review December 07

One of the very first things the new Green Schools Committee did was to conduct a survey of the school grounds to see just how much litter there was. Our aim was to identify the main types of rubbish left around the school, as well as to identify the litter black spots.

Paper, Paper, Paper

We noticed that each class was using a lot of paper. We asked each class to think about ways of reducing the amount of paper we use. A few classes came up with the same idea.....to have a box in the classroom for paper that has only been used on one side. Then, when you need a piece of paper to write a note, or to draw on, you choose a page from this box where possible. We realised that sometimes you need to get a new page, but not always! By using less paper we are reducing our carbon footprint.

Recycling old betteries, mobile phones and ink cartridges

The Coiste Glas decided that it would be good to encourage all the classes to bring in old batteries, mobile phones and ink cartridges to be recycled. In doing this, the amount of rubbish going to landfill would be reduced. A competition was organised and when all the counting was done, Ms. Cusack's class were the winners! They brought in more than 150 old batteries for recycling!! Well done to all the classes who took part. We collected 63 old mobile phones, and Trócaire receives €3 for each of these phones. So in total, we raised €189 for Trócaire. Comhghairdeas Scoil San Phroinsias.

lunch boxes

The green school committee noticed that a lot of the litter came from the school lunches. We then asked every child in the school to get a lunchbox. There was a reduction in the litter but not all children got a lunchbox. We began to check who had a lunchbox on Wednesdays.
